Thomas Vinterberg's Daughter, Ida, Passed Away Before Filming 'Another Round'

Sometimes the most efficient motion pictures have probably the most heartbreaking tales in the back of them. Danish director Thomas Vinterberg created his film Another Round about four longtime pals who come to a decision to handle their midlife crises via keeping up a consistent stage of intoxication. The movie gained two nominations for Academy Awards, and Thomas has incessantly dedicated the film to his past due daughter.

Before filming began for Another Round, Thomas had deliberate for his daughter, Ida, to make her debut within the movement picture. Ida was once set to play the teenage child of Mads Mikkelsen's persona, Martin. The movie was to be filmed at her highschool, with many of Ida's buddies appearing within the film as neatly.

“She shared her unconditional love of this challenge,” the director told IndieWire. “She felt seen via it.”

But 4 days into taking pictures for the challenge (before Ida had made it to the set), Thomas learned Ida and his ex-wife, Maria Walbom, have been in a automotive twist of fate in Belgium. Maria recovered from her accidents, whilst Ida was killed upon affect.

“My life was destroyed,” he advised the hole, noting that manufacturing used to be instantly halted. “It did not make sense to continue, nevertheless it did no longer make sense no longer to continue. She would’ve hated that. So we made up our minds to make the film for her. That was the one approach shall we do that.”

Ida was best 19 on the time of her passing.

Thomas devoted his Oscar win to Ida.

Despite the hardship, Another Round endured production in memory of Ida and received the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. During his acceptance speech, Thomas dedicated the award to his late daughter, remembering her fondly and noting how passionate she had been concerning the challenge sooner than her passing.

“Two months prior to we shot this film and two months sooner than she died, she was in Africa,” he said to the audience  after taking the degree. “She sent me a letter. And she’d simply read the script, and she was once glowing with pleasure. She liked this and felt noticed through this. She was intended to be in this. If any person dares to consider that she’s with us in some way, you’ll be ready to see her, clapping and cheering with us.”

Thomas used to be fighting tears as he gave his speech, noting how the driving force who crashed into his daughter used to be having a look at their cell phone while driving.

“We ended up making this movie for her, as her monument. So, Ida, this can be a miracle that simply happened, and also you’re part of this miracle. Maybe you’ve been pulling some strings someplace, I don’t know, but this one is for you.”

Another Round was once also nominated for an Oscar for Best Director.
